3 best practices for utilizing Google Analytics to track website performance?

Google Analytics is an incredible tool that offers a wealth of information. If you have a website, you need to drop everything and install Google Analytics (GA4) on the backend of your site now!

If you already have the code tracking your site, when was the last time you checked the data to see how your website is performing?

If you haven’t looked at the data in a while, or even ever, you are possibly making bad decisions about your marketing strategy.

The data collected in GA4 can give you the clear marketing plan you need to stop wasting your time and money.

Here are three best practices I recommend to anyone starting with Google Analytics.

1. Set up Key Events or Conversions

If you don’t know what a conversion is, no worries—most people don’t. But it is really an important action that a user can take on your website to show you they are interested. A conversion can be anything you feel is important, and then you should track that action.

A few examples of conversions are subscribing, submitting a contact form or any form, booking an appointment, and making a purchase. If you want someone to do something on your website, be sure you are tracking it.

2. Using UTM Link Parameters

This is a quick way to organize your marketing strategies and the results of those specific links in Google Analytics data. If you have several components to your marketing plan, you can track how each campaign performs by customizing the link when you paste it.

For example, when updating your Google Business profile, you can add this to the end of your website URL to see the traffic from this listing within your GA4 data.

?utm_source=local&utm_medium=organic&utm_content=main_button&utm_campaign=gmb

You don’t have to set up this parameter; you can use “Source/Medium” in your Traffic Acquisition Report.

3. Create a Report with Looker Studio

You may feel that going into the Google Analytics dashboard is overwhelming, especially when figuring out what to look at and what it means. However, there is an easier way to digest this information, with a customized report showing the information you need.

Making decisions based on the website performance will give you a better success rate as you adapt to what your audience likes, resulting in conversions.
